REALITY OF DREAMS

After a beautiful morning when a close friend’s call woke me up to indulge in an hour long conversation, one could feel that it was going to be one of those “right days”…the ones when everything seems to go …well… right…
Following that, a possibility that was probably fluttering about in the surrounding air ran into my mind at the time when all the great thoughts hit you…in the shower….

Here goes…

One thing that has always been extra-ordinarily successful in capturing my interest is the phenomenon of dreams. So what are they really?? Most of us know that scientifically speaking, we have the conscious, the unconscious and the sub-conscious mind. It is believed that dreaming is nothing but drifting away to one’s unconscious mind. We may conclude that now in the state of dreaming, the originally unconscious thoughts and elements constitute the conscious mind and the initially conscious elements fade away to being a part of the then unconscious mind. Let me know if the previous line got you confused and wasn’t explained well…I shall try again.
Now moving on…imagine that you are now in that state of dreaming…whatever is happening around you, all that you see feels very real does it not?? I agree that most of us do not remember much from those dreams once we are awake but we also don’t seem to remember much from this "real" world when we are dreaming. As many of you must have begun to notice by now, the line between dreams and reality is now a blur and the two just might not belong to the side where we like to think they do. What if those dreams are really the reality and this reality just another dream? Or further still …what if that parallel world we fantasize and hope to find actually does exist …and not just exist…it may even be a place that each person visits quite regularly already?
Many may disagree saying that the dreams are often quite illogical and may not always follow in sequence or are too erratic in nature…but then how can we be sure that a real world is not all of  that…its just something our mind has been conditioned to think that things are supposed to be logical and follow a constructive pattern rather than a mere existential one in reality…but just suppose for a few minutes we leave behind that conditioning and consider a different perspective…it may seem very impossible but might emit a bleak light of possibility…
Fascinating ….is what I thought of  it when I considered it….and although I don’t “know” if  there is a reason why this thought teasingly swept my thoughts….if it has any “reality “ to it….or if its merely a teaser that took shape to amuse me…
For all my psychology friends… lets just call it a hypothesis which I would definitely like to experiment…but at a time when I gain a more complete knowledge on the subject…and shall be thrilled if it does turn out to be confirmed…till then I can only hope ….
But this does change one thing in my life and after reading this…it might in yours too…..
Each morning I woke up and spent those few moments drowning in the vague afterglow of the virtual world I had just visited….now I shall know there’s a chance that it may not have been that virtual after all…..

  2. Nice Vasuki, you're a good writer. :)
And as far as dreams are concerned, there's no limist to our interpretations about them and they're just infinte, and seem real most of the times but actually are not. :O
Moving on, i think you've epressed your point relly well and there are many people who want to scruitinize dreams and i like your version of it. :)

  4. Vasuki, this is worded beautifully. As a fellow Psychology student - who might just take it up in the future, if languages let her down (seriously, God forbid...!) - I do agree with what you've written.
    :)

  5. VP..@...i recently came across the concept of a state called superconscious...and am intending to go deeper into the subject...it would be wonderful if you could perhaps further widen my horizons about the subject....and thanks for taking out time to read and appreciate the article....
suhina..@...hey thanks a ton...i'm glad the point came out as intended...

  6. loved it! I, too am entertained, shall we say by dreams. I even tried on basic stuff like doing a lot of something to induce a dream regarding the thing but to no avail. Yes,dreams are erratic in nature, but again its up to you to master the realm of reality, and accede to the threshold of beyond it. I wrote a paper on materialism, which got me interested in dreams. Am trying out lucid dreaming at the moment, to comprehend what exactly dreaming is! I love dreaming even though i dont know why, plus sleep is an added bonus!:) Other than that i have various theories of why we dream...some other day maybe..:P

  7. most definitely.....i would rather that day be sooner than later...and i would love to get an insight into the subject of materialism too...lucid dreaming too indeed is a marvellous study....i suppose we got a whole conversation scheduled....

ps - pardon the delay...came on-line after months of ....well...shall we call them technical difficulties....

  8. Your perception of dreams is totally in sync with mine...its freaky! But,don't dreams belong to the subconscious and not to the unconscious??
Ooh...i loved the last paragraph...it gave me goosebumps.
